Description
This Barking Owl had presence, sitting high on a branch, unmoving and silent, its large yellow eyes picking out even the slightest movement of its prey, consisting of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. From its high vantage point it scanned over the undergrowth and fields searching for its meal, as hawk owls they rely on their eyesight rather than hunting by sound. Their name comes from the distinctive dog like call of ‘wook wook’. These bird’s eyes are huge and beautiful. Created in pastel, I purposely set the bird against quite a dark green background therefore catching the light of its feathers, especially those soft delicate feathers around its beak. Its unwavering hunting eyes shining a magnificent intent yellow.
