Description
Exploring the desert area surrounding Broken Hill, Australia, the land initially seemed dry, bare and lifeless. Surprisingly amongst this rich, red landscape there were a variety of creatures that camouflaged themselves so well, they could have easily gone unnoticed. One such creature was this Shingleback. Even with a cautious approach this fine specimen gave an impressive display of its defense system, its blue tongue. This painting was created using pastels and pastel pencils. Choosing earth tones like red ochre and sienna’s to match the outstanding rich red landscape, adding blues and purples of the Shingleback’s scales. This seemingly barren desert truly was a colourful place in more ways than one.
