Description
The Rialto, the oldest Bridge in Venice and along with Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, one of the world’s most famous. It replaced a succession of prior wooden structures that broke, collapsed or burnt down.
Constructed from 1588, critics prophesised that it would collapse, but the design was favoured over multi-arch proposals. The inclusions of shops and its location, between San Polo and San Marco, ensure heavy tourist traffic.
