Description
Neuschwanstein is one of the world’s most recognisable castles, partly from its innate aesthetics, and partly due to its inspiration for Disney’s fairyland centres. Deep in the forests and lakes of Grimms tales, German folklore, and Wagner’s legends, the castle is redolent of tales of princes, witches, monsters and heroines of diverse nature. Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who died before its completion, the castle attracts thousands of tourists an occasions. Conversely, the SS used the site during World War II to store stolen artworks, and thus featured in the George Clooney “Monument Men” movie about the reclamations of these works. The extensive coverage of the site in Wikipedia is well worth perusal.
