Description
The Scala Contarini is one of the quirky architectural masterpieces for which Venice is famous, dating from the latter 15th century, and comprises the external staircase of the Contarini family’s Palazzo del Bovolo. It is in the San Marco district north-west of the Piazza and the Basilica. The Scala is described as a synthesis of Renaissance, gothic and Byzantine styles and provides views across much of San Polo. The staircase overlooks a small courtyard with traditional Venetian wells
