Thematically, international conflict influences here are apparent. The image, however, began as an investigation into shape construction and the application of photograph textures.  Sculptor Barbara Hepworth inspired the shape investigation including the recumbent figure behind the pink forms. When the textures were applied behind the sculpted forms the conflict link was obvious and so I decided to build on this and applied the dynamic coloured directional elements with an expressionist feel. Compositionally the originally portrait format felt too constrained and I added the right hand side – the mountain backdrop with linear parallel lines pushing the mountain up and out of the bottom of the frame. Is nature as ‘violent’ as humanity. Is there some sort of balance to war and peace that as humans we can’t avoid?
