John Howard, long term politician who rose from the member for Bennelong to become Treasurer under Malcom Fraser, then leader of the Liberal Party, and Prime Minister  in 1996. Notorious foe retrospective legislation to scuttle “bottom of the harbour” tax-avoidance schemes, he endured adversity from Bob Hawke, Andrew Peacock, Joh Belke-Petersen, and Paul Keating until finally succumbing to Kevin Rudd after several electoral victories.
