Description
Eastern aspect of the diptych, illustrating the Scuola Grande di San Marco. The building is in Renaissance style with some Byzantine influences. It incorporates images worked in differing coloured marble. The Grande Scuola was a co-fraternaty in which members paid dues or gave bequests as insurance against social distress. There were six major such institutions and a wealth of minor societies, which were dissolved after the Napoleonic invasion of 1797.
