Description
A Venetian local taking a quiet smoke break in the summer afternoon. In the background is an appealing villa in Canaregio, the westernmost of the Venetian sestieri (districts), immediately north of the initial reach of the Grand Canal, as one enters Venice from the mainland. More a working/artisanal neighbourhood that also includes the old Jewish ghetto area. Fine details of the crumbling old facade in the background
As elsewhere, the canals hold a wealth of traditional architecture, This venue encompassing an unusual portico, possibly dating later than the original structure. The site displays the usual Venetian passion for protective ironwork, to deter the local ne’er do wells. The lingering gent having a puff seems likely to be one of the letters, displaying a slightly seedy character, possibly a waiter or barman? Not sure that you’d like your daughter out with him.
