The Hospices/Hotel-Dieu de Beaune, Burgundy was built in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Rolin was a leading statesman towards the end of the 100 Years War. And built the hospices as a hospital for the poor, Burgundy just recovering from a plague at the time.
Over many years, it received a great number of donations of vineyard plots such that today it one of the principal wine institutions of the region.
Each year on the third Sunday of November a food and wine festival (les Trois Glorieuses) takes place in Beaune. In conjunction a major auction of Hospices wine is held in the main hall, and this gives a general guide to the success of the vintage offered.
The Hotel-Dieu is classic 15th century Burgundian architecture with the complex glazed tiling roof pattern a commanding feature. There is a fascinating museum within.
