Back to My Country

Description

Back to my Country is a painting which I started on the day my Grandmother passed away.  I wanted to create a piece of art that would tell Nan’s story and the significant moments of her life, including her time at Elrita and on Palm Island. The painting also talks about the 13 children she brought into this world, and her dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren she left behind.  Nan and Grandad’s home in Dean Street, Rockhampton, was a place that brought us all together and a place where we felt loved. Even when her children moved to their own homes in other cities, we would always gravitate back to their home and always felt that connection.  The very last words my Nan said to me before she passed were ‘Siddy, I’m going home – back to my Country’.
