Wondering with a Pawpaw

This composition pictures me contemplating the cycle of life with a pawpaw. Only the pawpaw is given colour in the print thus it becomes the focal point of the composition just as it was for my contemplation. I have tried to capture a moment of wonder and complexity that is known to all gardeners by making the drawing dense and complex, thereby knitting all the elements of the garden together. I am represented as a minor figure, a player among many players. Few activities make me as happy as art making, gardening is one of them.

What a miracle fruit is – it contains all that is needed to transform itself into a tree. It also contains an adaptability and evolutionary capacity. Making art is a transformative experience too, but it is not a miracle. At its best, it is a result of focused thought, disciplined skill and application. The pawpaw perpetuates its species cycle unconsciously, whereas artmaking constantly asks me ‘are you awake’?
