Everyone has their own sanctuary, mine is my studio garden. I grow with it and in it; a garden is a place of reflection – for it mirrors the mind of the maker and is in a state of constant ‘becoming’. The garden gets my tending for it to grow into the best that it can be, in return it nurtures me. In his poem ‘the garden’, the poet Andrew Marvell put it this way, ‘Meanwhile the mind, from pleasure less, Withdraws into its happiness …….. Annihilating all that’s made, to a green thought in a green shade’.
This composition stands outside conventional time, for I have compressed the seasons. Not all the plants flower and fruit at the same time of year – but everything likes to look their best in an artwork; even plants. If Picasso could bend space, then I can bend time.
