The back canals of Venice can be a haven from the madding crowds of San Marco, a rabbit warren of narrow canals and footpaths crisscrossed by bridges that display a wealth of wrought iron lacework which is one of the hallmarks of these areas.
Whilst many of the buildings are drab and run-down, others exhibit a fascinating range of styles and ornamentation. A lingering gondola ride of gives a much better appreciation of the "real Venice", more so than a Grand Canal dash on a vaporetto
