Evening Splendour

Open Edition Reproduction

During the 2020 COVID lockdowns my love of painting live 'en plein air' became 'en plein lounge'. I was you might say, an unreasonably happy lockdown dweller, sketching the ever shifting panoramas from the 53rd floor of the Meriton Infinity Tower.

Description

In late 2020 a particularly beautiful afternoon deepened to an early evening so exquisite that I could not resist taking to my paints. I needed to paint that particular sky; those actual cloud forms and those wonderful colours. Late afternoon is my favourite time of day to sketch and paint because of the lengthening shadows and intense hues. In the city, lights start to peep shyly at first from suburbs and city building columns and pinprick trace the paths of human activity down streets and across bridges. This sky is faithfully reproduced from my memory and a few photographic references. The city and riverscape is more impressionistic and sketched live over a few days, as I observed river activity I found interesting. The pin prick lights are achieved using the same masking fluid technique as my starry skies, just more precisely placed where needed.
