Di Cox is an artist with a passion for semi-abstract interpretations of our natural world. Based in Brisbane, Australia, her artistic soul embraces the free spirit of her upbringing. Born to Italian immigrants and growing up the youngest of four girls on a cane farm in north Queensland, her idyllic childhood was simple and carefree. Surrounded by nature and often left to her own devices, creativity came naturally to her, always central to her essence.
A prolific child painter, things got real and the expectation of a ‘real’ job took precedence. As a qualified physiotherapist, Di was immensely satisfied with her lot in life for many years: as is often the case, life detoured via work and family. Still, creativity was always close to her heart, the undeniable facet of her being re-emerged in 2010. Di Cox revived her artistic spirit under the guidance of many respected art teachers.
In almost 15 years of dedication to her craft, Di has earnt the recognition of a respected Abstracted Impressionist artist, with a strong following. She is honoured to have her work held in private collections across Australia and overseas.
Di focuses on a positive life balance. She divides her time between nurturing her creativity, her career in health – which daily provides marvel at the strength of the human spirit – and giving back to the community by regularly volunteering at Art West Community Gallery and Royal Queensland Art Society. When the opportunity arises, travel also enriches her life, and provides inspiration, as demonstrated by her award-winning photography.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“My design approach echoes a country childhood fuelled by freedom and promise. Creatively, I thrive on this freedom; working intuitively, and driven by my love of country and nature, each work instinctively evolves into a unique and personal creation.
My contemporary, semi-abstract works are a fusion, hallmarked by colour and translucency, where my watercolour training transmutes to my now preferred acrylic media.
Art for me is an experience. I cannot say it any better than American Author Thomas Merton: I love that “…art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
