Artist Biography

Marie Seeman is a Central Queensland artist who enjoys painting, across a broad range of subject matter.  Marie has a rural background, growing up on a cattle property, near Comet, a small regional town.  She developed a love of the country from her early upbringing in the bush and this passion has stayed with her throughout her life.

In later years, Marie nurtured her desire to experience life across the far reach of Australia, travelling and studying Anthropology, at various Australian universities.  Her studies led Marie to work with fellow artists and environmental groups, with a focus on the Swan River in Perth, exploring the community’s sense of belonging to this beautiful waterway.  Marie’s interactions within these stunning watery environments reignited her creative talents.

Since returning to her beloved Central Queensland region, Marie has continued to develop her artistic skills.   Marie has furthered her passion in drawing and painting through her studies in Visual Arts.  This has led to a range of successful art exhibits within Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Biloela.  Marie enjoys living in the countryside on a farm near Rockhampton and finds inspiration from her natural environment, painting flowers, animals, landscapes, seascapes, the built environment, portraits and still life.

To Marie, art provides a pathway to highlight beauty in her surrounds and emphasise the emotional connections, embedded meanings and the natural rhythms of life.  She enjoys the process of bringing the subject matter to life on a canvas through both drawing and painting.  Sparked by her early rural life, Marie continues to be fascinated by experimenting with different colours, choosing subtle hues, mixing desired shades, blending tones and adding highlights and shape to recreate a likeness of the subject matter.  Marie enjoys creating a composition from an idea and developing the artwork to tell a meaningful story.  Working mainly with pastels and oils, Marie is drawn to the softness and intensity of pastels and likes how oils glide and glisten over the canvas.

Marie’s current artwork focuses on painting a series of pet dog portraits.  She has worked with a variety of breeds in different contexts and captured their stories, as shared by their owners.  She enjoys the connections she has with the dogs and using their narrative to create an authentic composition.  Marie also uses elements from different photos and combine these visual references to create a genuine story about the pet dog.  For example, in her artwork “Come Play with Me”, Charlie the puppy is situated in front of a gloomy brick wall to symbolise how Charlie is feeling, and Marie has put a ball from another photo in front of Charlie to emphasise Charlie’s playful nature and the dogs’ wishful intentions.  Marie recreates the likeness of each dog and brings the animal to life through their facial features, with particular attention given to their soulful eyes. Marie finds the whole process of creating an artwork exciting and challenging.

Completion of each artwork provides Marie with a feeling of satisfaction and a sense of a genuine connection with people, animals, places and experiences in the world.  Marie feels privileged to be able to use her artistic talents to evoke the beauty of her chosen subject matter.
