Sophie Tosh's Gallery

Sophie Tosh

Sophie’s art is rooted in the rich textures of Australian countryside. She grew up on a farm near Canowindra in NSW, and spent many happy hours climbing trees, building cubbies and catching yabbies in the creek with her five brothers and sisters. From a young age Sophie discovered drawing and painting as her ‘quiet place’ in a busy household, and she would lose herself as she tried to capture the bright colours of the natural beauty surrounding her.

Experimenting with different approaches to subject and style has been an integral part of Sophie’s journey over the years. At a young age, her parents encouraged her passion, and arranged art lessons for her with local artist, Simone Russell. In these early days, Sophie began experimenting with new styles, textures and mediums. Her love of art only grew over the years, and after Sophie finished school, she moved to Broken Hill for a year where she managed a small art gallery, Ochre Sands for the landscape artist, Sue Hodge.

Not long after this, Sophie studied a Diploma of Fine Arts in Newcastle, and then an Advanced Diploma in Dubbo. These were fantastic years, experimenting with new mediums like dark-room photography, print-making and sculpture.

In 2014 she was artist in residence at Dubbo Myall Street Tafe, creating her first solo art exhibition, Glimpses, in which she painted nostalgic scenes on old suitcases. These works evoke scenes from everyday life that were designed to capture the imagination and provoke contemplation about the surreal and beautiful facets of human experience.

In 2015 Sophie completed a diploma in Photography, and now lives with her husband in the Dubbo countryside. Her art is still her ‘quiet place’ in a busy life, and she works in many different mediums to create bright and beautiful artworks that she hopes will “help people to pause, reflect and appreciate the wonder all around them”.
