Where Artists and Lovers of Art Meet!

Featured Artist

Shaun Weston

Shaun Weston works across a variety of media, but his art practice is grounded in painting. In recent years he has focused on flowers and people as subjects, through which he explores coded representations of personal narrative.

As a kid Shaun thought his claim to fame would be as an author. Growing up in Central Queensland, much of his childhood was spent writing and illustrating short stories and he began formal painting lessons at the age of eleven.  Today, many of his artworks stand in place of stories he can’t find the words to express.

A great deal of importance is placed on the title of each work, but Shaun acknowledges that all art is open to interpretation. He welcomes feedback and delights in what people see and feel, stating, “My ultimate goal is connection – to communicate a shared experience between viewer and maker.” Whilst on one hand Shaun simply portrays the fleeting beauty of a famous face or a bunch of flowers, he has been described as someone who is constantly looking for deeper meaning, even in things that seem superficial.

Shaun’s formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Art) from Queensland University of Technology and a Certificate IV in Graphic Design and Advertising from the Commercial Arts Training College. At university he earned the nickname “Fluff Monger” given he literally paints fluffy materials. Working from his suburban Brisbane studio, he paints on alternative materials, which include chenille (vintage bedspreads remain a favourite) and layered newspaper.

“I believe the texture of the materials I use and the inherent qualities of paintings, such as drips and brush marks, should be visible (whether subtle or obvious) and I am amazed by how brilliantly such details can be captured in high quality reproductions.
