Nai Nai Bird's Gallery

Nai Nai Bird

Nai Nai Bird is an Elder of the Butchulla people whose homeland is K’gari (Fraser Island) and the adjacent mainland. She is a direct descendent of the Wonamutta (the “Clever Man”) and the tribal niece of the Turramun-uwuy (“Wise Woman”). The Turramun-uwuy was her teacher and mentor for sixteen years, passing on to her the Teachings of Butchulla art, culture, customary law and history of the ancestors.

Nai Nai has a Diploma of Herbology and specialises in bush medicine and bush foods. She has also studied botanical art and remains an active Butchulla cultural heritage specialist. Her art is the culmination of these areas of her life works. Nai Nai uses her paintings to record bush food and bush medicine, native fauna as well as to tell Creation stories of the Butchulla people.

With the support from her family elders, Nai Nai’s artworks and crafts are done in both a traditional and contemporary indigenous style, on canvas using acrylic paints with paint brushes from natural fibres. Her belief is that by painting about Butchulla culture, she is preserving it for future generations.
