This pair of young boobooks had an insatiable appetite which kept the parents heading off to find food. The Southern Boobook is named for its call; a brief double hoot with the second note pitched lower than the first. It sounds like ‘boo-book’ or ‘mo-pork’ (which it is sometimes also called). The call is often repeated after a brief pause. It is a common sound heard throughout most of Australia at night.
One night, the noises emanating from amongst the trees were different to the typical Boobook call I was used to hearing and seemed to be originating from somewhere quite close. Investigation revealed a pair of young Boobooks being fed by their parents. I only ever saw one adult at a time, but I believe both parents were bringing food to keep up with the young Boobooks’ insatiable appetites. An adult flew in with food, mostly large insects, and fed the squabbling siblings before disappearing back into the night, and then the whole scene would repeat again and again.
