A sacred place. The remarkable Glass House Mountains are a series of steep sided volcanic plugs which dominate the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. There are 16 peaks in total formed of rhyolite and trachyte lavas hardened inside vents of tertiary volcanoes which have been greatly eroded by weathering over 25 million years.
The Glass House Mountains area was a special meeting place where many First Nations Peoples gathered for ceremonies and trading. This place is considered spiritually significant with many ceremonial sites still present and protected today. The bush here sustained people for thousands of years. The Glass House Mountains area provided many resources from a varied and rich environment that included river systems, open forests, coastal wetlands and mountain forests.
Embracing the essence of organic abstraction, her work reflects her love of nature and her new home in Queensland, Australia. Working intuitively, with acrylic and oil, she explores the idea of perception vs. reality within the textured, organic shapes and colours found in our landscape. “Random and illusive pattern found in nature is by far my greatest inspiration” she says. “My use of exaggerated colour provides the structure that underpins my experimental approach to applying paint in transparent, translucent and opaque layers”. Kris was a finalist in the 2021 Lethbridge Landscape Art Prize and a finalist in the 2021 Lethbridge 20000 Small Scale Art Prize.
