Jen is an Australian artist based in northern NSW.
What most often inspires your work?
Mostly nature. My home is like a tree house and I sit there a lot just looking and absorbing all the ever changing colours, textures and patterns. I also love beautiful vintage fabrics, old stained glass windows, different lighting used in films and music of course because it’s just so good for you.
Was there a key moment when you decided to follow your path as an artist?
I remember working on great locations as a hair + makeup artist. There was a particular day on set I was mesmerised by all the beauty. It got me wondering how can I paint that flower…. look at those colours …. the textures. It’s all so magnificent! I’ve always been intrigued as to how I can grab that feeling and translate it onto canvas.
What is your favourite medium?
I’ve just fallen in love with oil paint, so I now use a mixture of acrylic and oils.
Describe your creative process.
There’s always incense, music and my dog. I prefer short stints in the studio as I tend to do a lot of preparation in the experimental stage. Walking, meditating and daydreaming are also essential to the process. So when I actually hit the studio it’s full throttle and time to get those ideas out!
Are there any other interests you love to indulge in?
Wine in the sun is always a good idea. Anything that makes me laugh.
Who do you paint for?
Well, I mostly paint for the joy of it. Then the paintings have to go to work and attract their audience, so I’d say it’s open and always a surprise to see who’s drawn to each work.
