Does the Swallow fly by your wisdom?

Price:

Size: 53x73

The inspiration for this piece came by way of contemplating where we lose the sense of wonder which was in the world when we were children. How is it that we progressively fall into abstracting our experience until all the spontaneity and life is lost from it?

And how might and should it be un-forgotten? In creating the composition, I enjoyed creating the juxtaposition between the two childhood toys, a swing and a teddy bear, which perhaps no longer the delight they once did, and the promise of the swallows above. There was also a tension for me, as to whether the subject is losing her grip on the bear in his fine trousers.

The title is a reference to the book of Job (39:26) ""Does the hawk fly by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south?” Although religion has not been a part of my life since my early teens, over the last several years I have taken to reading scripture for interest with a more open (albeit atheist) lens. In these closing chapters of Job, he is challenged to reconcile his construction of his life with the world as it is.
