Di Cox is an artist with a passion for semi-abstract interpretations of our natural world. Based in Brisbane, Australia, her artistic soul embraces the free spirit of her upbringing. Born to Italian immigrants and growing up the youngest of four girls on a cane farm in north Queensland, her idyllic childhood was simple and carefree. Surrounded by nature and often left to her own devices, creativity came naturally to her, always central to her essence.
Although this passion was put on pause in her early adult life, with work and raising a family taking precedence, the undeniable facet of her being re-emerged in 2010. Di Cox revived her artistic spirit under the guidance of many respected art teachers. Di’s work celebrates colour - colour that radiates in our clear Australian light – and nature: the beauty of our uniquely Australian flora and fauna.
Now herself a respected local artist with works in private collections across Australia and overseas, Di finds herself blessed with a perfect life balance: dividing her time between nurturing her creativity, her love of family and friends, and giving back to the community through her support for Art West Community Gallery.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I have a passion for semi-abstract interpretations of our natural world, my artistic soul embracing the free spirit of my idyllic country upbringing.
My free spirit flourishes through my art: I revel in creatively that is not restricted by boundaries. I adore the freedom of semi-abstract work, the ability to respond innately, intuitively to the texture and colour on the canvas. Through instinct, each piece evolves to a unique and personal creation.
I began my art practice in watercolours in 2010; in recent years I have fused the delicacy of this media with acrylics, to create an ethereal translucency and depth. I embrace both mediums, and through them I embolden my love of colour.
Art for me is an experience. I cannot say it any better than American Author Thomas Merton: I love that “…art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”"
