We were lucky to polarise a moment in time on one of my visits to country. Just shy of Mount Carbine, you hit left opposite the old caravan park and old grandfather mala (other) lives close to the old unmarked graves. His presence there for all of us Yalanji living down Naka gala (south) is a Godsend as he is like a beacon for us in terms of having that physical presence live like the old people did in the bygone days. It was fortuitous this particular picture being taken, but after viewing it later, I felt compelled to paint it and place it on my 2015 release of Western Sons. Bless his little dog, still alive when I took my grandson up for business in 2021. We love ya, old man, and we’re grateful and blessed you there, gummimala.
