Description
Open Edition Reproduction
The old gunner and his mate on the quarterdeck of a Napoleonic first rate. The weapon is a 64-pound carronade, with a short-range heavy ball designed for maximum damage. The recoil is restrained by a slide rather than wheels.
Produced by the Carron Works in Glasgow, the gun was popular in the British Navy due to its value in short range engagements where it could also be used for grape or canister shot to clear the enemy’s deck. The gunner’s uniform is that of a petty officer of the period. Did you spot Ronnie Wood of the Stones?
