I have a great respect for nature and the mesmerising colour field paintings of Mark Rothko. Everything is fascinating in a natural setting and I love to take photographs in nature. Taking photos in nature is a way of making you stop and pay attention to what is around you. It envelopes you in a sense of calm similar to looking at Rothko’s later works. Conversely I also feel that the essence of nature is energy – life. So on top a basis of reverence for nature (layers of photos in selected monochrome colours like silk screen ink layers) I have created overlays of pattern to add surface energy to this image – in this piece they represent rock strata.
