Underwater dog (Sub-Woofer…). Bowie is a red cattle dog with attitude (but a sense of humour) who loves diving into our pool after his favourite ball. This is a coloured pencil drawing that was a significant step between my earlier pet portraits and later detailed oil paintings. This is my muse, my red cattle dog Bowie, who is a total jerk.
Bowie doesn't play well with others, but he is hugely devoted to his family and has a great sense of fun. Renowned for ""zoomies"" on top of the pool cover, and fearless leaps into our swimming pool, I encouraged him to dive deep for his favourite ball in a vain attempt to wear him out. The pair of us were exhausted by the time he had retrieved the ball for the twentieth time and I had managed to hold my breath long enough to photograph enough material with my new waterproof camera to be able to draw him in action.
I love the fur moving in the water, the powerful swimming style, the myriad of bubbles, the mosaic tiles and the distortion of the light through/reflecting on the surface of the water.
The original artwork was drawn entirely with coloured pencil and pan pastels.
Bowie is now a ""tripawd"", so the front leg hidden behind the clouds of bubbles was a little prophetic. This work was voted People's Choice #2 in the HDGA 2021 Exhibition.
