Description
Open Edition Reproduction
The greatest church of Catholicism, in the Eternal City. Viewed across the Bridge of Angels as it spans the Tiber, with Michelangelo’s great dome the main feature. The view is more one of serenity vis a vis that of the power and majesty of the Maderno façade and Bernini colonnade.
The church (not a cathedral – not a bishop’s seat) was built on the site of St Peter’s tomb, replacing and early Constantine building, and went through multiple designs and alterations during construction covering the term of dozens of Popes.
