A child is unaware during a pandemic that affected the world. When COVID struck our shores the world went into lockdown and took away the freedoms we once knew as a way of life.

We were forced to wear masks and could only exit our homes for essential items. Once outdoors we had to practice social distancing. This affected families and the world in many ways. Social activities became a luxury we took for granted. The world has been affected with not only human loss, but also an economic crisis.

One at a time my family got COVID and even our granddaughter contracted the virus. I wanted to do a piece of art that showed the concerns parents and families faced.

This artwork represents the innocence of a child that is unaware of the pandemic that grips the world. Mum and dad cautiously wear their masks and look worried as they embrace their child. The child smells a flower which is something some people with COVID are unable to do as it can make some lose their sense of smell and taste. Holding the flower to her nose mimics a mask and her eyes follow the viewer. She can’t understand why the adults have to cover their face.

I created this artwork in charcoal with a splash of watercolour. The deep blacks and harsh shadows to represent the sadness and loss from this pandemic. I added a splash of colour in the little girl’s floral dress and the flower she smells as we may be feeling down with lockdowns but outside the flowers are still in full bloom.
