When I used to live in Yeronga there was a great farmers market called Missy Mae’s that operated once a week on the footpath outside a couple of restaurants. It was great to be able to just walk around the corner to buy fresh produce, I felt like an old-timey farmwife. The plastic produce bags, bright orange tubs and EFTPOS machine may have spoiled the daydream a little but it was still pretty great.

And how about the light filtering through a nearby Poinciana tree, dappling the fresh produce with interesting patterns of sunlight and shade?  This painting featuring capsicums was actually attempt #2 of this scene. Attempt #1 consisted of butternut pumpkins sitting next to the orange tubs, but the colours and light just didn’t contrast enough to make it interesting. Capsicums on the other hand, are very photogenic and enjoy being the centre of attention.
