Wandering around a foreign city, you can see the temples and curated attractions and you can see snapshots of everyday life. Both matter, but I find the snapshots of everyday life more interesting. It was cold the day I took this photo and I’d already seen the nearby temple. I was wandering around the narrow winding backstreets, ready to head back to the hotel when I walked up this alleyway.
The boxes and dented old pots caught my eye. You can never see everything when you visit another country, but seeing everyday life makes a visit feel more grounded. I can imagine the flipside to this though: imagine wandering around your own city with its beautiful highlights and seeing a tourist taking photos of boxes in an alleyway.
