Description
This galaxy boasts prominent, well-developed spiral arms that stretch across the image. The reprocessed stellar light by dust grains and molecules in the galaxy’s medium illuminates a dramatic filamentary structure, with empty cavities and bright filaments giving the impression of ripples propagating from the spiral arms. Located in the constellation Canes Venatici, M51 is part of a studied galaxy pair with its neighbour NGC 5195, whose gravitational influence may have contributed to M51’s stately spiral arms.
The breathtaking spectacle of the swirling, twisted molecular energy of newly formed star clusters, a mesmerizing dance of colour and light, served as the artist’s muse, inspiring a vibrant and dynamic artwork that captures the raw energy of creation and the birth of a new generation of stars.
