Description

This image depicts the tendency we all exhibit at one time or another to run from the truth, which is often too difficult to accept for one reason or another.

The runner in this portrayal is only focussed on the run. His face, adjoined to the top of his legs, is pointing skyward symbolising the fact that he is not running anywhere in particular, because ultimately there is nowhere to run to.

This imagery was largely inspired by the lyrics of an song by the Neville Brothers entitled ‘Sons and Daughters’. It’s about accepting the narrative we are often force fed, and accepting the futility of war.

It questions why we send our sons and daughters ‘off to the slaughter’:

“It’s freedom of speech, as long as you don’t say to much.

I think we’re all running, thinking that we can hide,

I think we’re running, trying to get away,

but sooner or later we’re gonna realise we’re gonna meet up with the truth face to face.

You can’t stop running water.

You can’t kill the fire that burns inside.

Don’t deny our flesh and blood.

Don’t forsake our sons and daughters.”
