Description
The architecture of Edinburgh is challenging to depict – cracked and mossy bricks, stone and slate, full of strange angles and with a million chimneys – it isn’t called “Auld Reekie” for nothing! Before going smokeless a few years back, the old city used to be filled with smoke and choking smog. Nowadays, the air is much clearer; they’ve even banned old cars from the city centre. The colours of this painting are, therefore, mainly browns and greys contrasting with the warm yellow of the cafe window. The perspective is tricky – the viewpoint is on the second floor, so the viewer looks both up and down and the building opposite is a strange, triangular shape on the sloped pavement of Cockburn Street. Very challenging, but interesting nonetheless!
By the way, Edinburgh Swish is actually a hat shop, but the artist wanted to capture Edinburgh’s vibrant cafe scene.
