Description

Open Edition Reproduction

Bamburgh Castle lies on the Northumberland coastline a little south from Lindisfarne. It incorporates a Norman Keep built by Henry II and occupies a site maintained as a strongpoint from early Celtic times and is the site of Bebbenburg of Bernard Cornwell’s “Last Kingdom” novels and TV series.

Often regarded as impregnable, the site was taken and sacked by the Vikings (evidently after Uhtred’s time) and was one of the last Lancastrian redoubts to be reduced by the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses. Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, “the Kingmaker” used cannon for the first time that a castle succumbed to artillery. The castle remains well restored and open for visitors.
