Description
AG Carinae: A Dazzling but Volatile Star
One of the brightest stars in our galaxy, is surrounded by a massive, glowing halo of gas and dust. This star is engaged in a precarious battle between gravity and radiation, threatening its own destruction.
The star’s enormous structure, spanning five light-years, was formed from a series of massive eruptions about 10,000 years ago. These explosions expelled approximately 10 times the mass of our Sun, creating a vast, expanding shell of gas and dust.
Their lives are marked by periods of calm, followed by explosive outbursts that eject massive amounts of material into space. These outbursts occur when the star is on the verge of self-destruction, and are a result of the star’s struggle to balance its internal pressure and gravitational forces.
AG Carinae, continues to blast out intense radiation and powerful winds, shaping the surrounding nebula at incredible speeds equivalent to approximately 1.1 million km/h. This wind-swept effect has cleared a cavity around the star, sculpting intricate structures as the wind collides with the slower-moving gas.
This rare star, one of only 50 in our local galaxy group, is a key target for astronomers studying the effects of massive stars on their environment. Its eventual supernova blast will enrich the universe with heavier elements, a vital process in cosmic evolution.
The artist was drawn to the star’s central, eye-like structure and sought to convey its explosive radiance, turbulent energy, and the dynamic interaction between its radiation and gravity through a vibrant palette of bold reds, blues, greens and subtle purples.
The artwork is available in two distinct versions, one featuring a bold and vibrant red and orange tones and the other showcasing a calming and soothing blue tone with hints of purple.
