Abramo Papp

Abramo Papp was born in Genoa, Italy, to an Italian mother and a Hungarian father and migrated to Australia in 1954 at the age of three. Although showing some promise as an artist while still at school, he went on to study and practice Architecture most of his working life with the occasional return to art classes at the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) in 1986 and 1988.

In 2005 he retired from architecture and moved from the Western suburbs in Brisbane to Manly on Moreton Bay because of his passion for sailing and the water. From 2006 to 2010 he resumed art classes at the BIA, attending courses regularly and in 2010 with his group of fellow student artists decided to hold a group exhibition and form the ‘Friday 13 Group’ which continues to meet and paint at the BIA studios on a weekly basis, hold regular exhibitions and enter art competitions. In 2009 he moved to Russell Island to moor his boat ‘Prelude’ and set up his studio.

In 2011, he undertook 3 years training in Transpersonal Art Therapy to explore more deeply the ‘psyche’ of art from a perspective different from convention art training. From this training, he developed a course ‘Unleashing Your Inner Artist’ which introduces the art experience for people in a more intuitive and less formal / threatening way.  In 2013, he came upon Merv Moriarty’s ‘Colour, the Definitive Guide’ which brought him full circle to finally completing his understanding of colour, first studied during his art and architecture training in the mid 60’s and 70’s. Since 2014 his practice includes running courses at the BIA on colour, oil painting and his own ‘Unleashing Your Inner Artist’..
